Falconry Award
Who is this course aimed at?
This Award is aimed at those who:
- are new to Falconry
- wish to keep Raptors and/or Owls
- are experienced keepers/ falconers that want an Award to evidence a minimum level of competence.
This Award is approved by the Hawk Board and is administered by Lantra Awards.
What are the objectives of this course?
This course will enable you to demonstrate:
- all aspects of bird of prey management and husbandry up to flying to the fist on a line or creance
- practical skills necessary to keep a bird of prey in a safe and healthy condition
- an understanding of relevant background knowledge
What does the Award involve?
The Award is divided into two mandatory units and one optional unit, which are:
- Unit 1. Bird of prey management and husbandry (Mandatory)
- Unit 2. Basic falconry techniques (Mandatory)
- Unit 3: Conditioning and flying free a bird of prey (Optional).
This Award is designed to assess learners competence to keep a Raptor or Owl in a safe and healthy condition. Learners must be able to demonstrate that they have the necessary background knowledge as well as the practical skills that this entails. To do this learners must register with a Lantra Awards Administration Point (AP) who will allocate an Assessor to the learner who is a Falconer who is experienced with a number of different types of birds of prey. The Assessor may also be the learners teacher/ mentor (where a course is undertaken) although this is not always the case as experienced Falconers may opt for assessment only in order to achieve the Award.
Assessments involve the learner collecting (with the support of their Assessor) evidence of their competence relating to the modules listed above. These can be written, photographic, video clips, diagrams or verbal descriptions. Learners Assessor’s will not recommend them for the Award until he/she is happy that they have met the requirements. Learners will then receive a certificate from Lantra Awards.
What is the duration of achieving this award?
This depends upon the learners level of experience and prior knowledge. Those new to falconry or keeping a bird of prey will probably want to undergo training and support through an AP (which may also be a falconry/ hawking club). Experienced Falconers need only be assessed. Learners will need to contact APs to establish the length of the course and/or any arrangements for assessment. Lantra Awards can provide you with a current list of APs.
