Loading Shovel

Plant machines such as loading shovels are one of the workhorses of landbased and construction industries. The different types of machines and attachments now available make them extremely versatile and effective worksite tools. But even the most experienced operators can find themselves in potentially dangerous situations. Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training.

Who is the course for

Anyone who uses or will be using a wheeled or tracked loading shovel in the land-based industries or construction industry.

Course content

  • Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation (PUWER, LOLER).
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
  • Set the loading shovel for travel.
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground, both in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Travel up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Carry out excavations from an embankment of different materials and form stockpiles (and ramps – wheeled).
  • Ensure load integrity and security.
  • Clean, spread and level differing types of material (wheeled) or backfill, spread and level differing types of material using a multi-purpose front bucket (tracked).
  • Carry out excavations from below ground level (tracked).
  • Load various types of materials into receptacles, i.e. vehicles, hoppers etc
  • Place the loading shovel in an out-of-service condition.
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.

Completing this course

Holding a recognised certificate of training demonstrates that you have been adequately trained ‘for purposes of health and safety including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the machine, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken’ (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998)) Approved Code of Practice and Guidance.
