Ride-on Roller training courses

Rollers are extensively used within the construction and groundscare industries, however these machines need to be operated by staff that have attended and passed an appropriate accredited roller training course. This training is for anyone who uses or will be using a ride-on roller in the land-based industries or construction industry.

What type of course is this?

Roller training can either be held at your site for groups of people or at our own site for individuals or smaller groups. Our roller training courses cover the theory and practice of operation and day to day maintenance.

It is important when contacting us about roller training courses to give us an accurate overview of the experience levels and existing relevant qualifications held by all the people to attend the course.

Course content

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation (PUWER, LOLER).
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
  • Set the roller for site travel.
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground.
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction.
  • Set the roller for compaction duties
  • Prepare an area prior to compacting. For example, traffic/personnel management
  • Compact materials to given instructions.
  • Compact up to supported and unsupported edges.
  • Compact against radii.
  • Compact around obstructions.
  • Place the roller in an out-of-service condition.
  • Recognise compacted and non-compacted areas.
  • State conditions that may cause instability of the roller.
  • State safety procedures when working up to unsupported edges.
  • Explain safety procedures when compacting on inclines.
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.
