Maintenance, CrossCutting & Felling Small Trees upto 380mm inc. takedown of Hung Up Trees Using Hand Tools
This Lantra Awards chainsaw course is for novice operators with little or no experience of chainsaw use, who are
required to maintain and operate chainsaws for both cross cutting and felling to guide bar
length. The course is designed to prepare candidates for assessment for NPTC
Certificate of Competence units CS 30 and 31. This course will contribute towards achievement of NVQ/SVQ Forestry Level 2, Unit T10.

- Introduction
- Safety and health features of a chainsaw
- Maintenance
- Personal protective equipment
- Fuelling and starting a chainsaw
- Preparing site and chainsaw checks
- Performing pre-cutting checks
- Adjusting the chainsaw
- Felling demonstration
- Felling trees up to 380mm diameter
- Additional felling techniques
- De-limbing felled trees
- Cross cutting trunks of felled trees
- Stack timber
- Takedown of Hung-up trees
Course duration
Novice trainees: 5 long days - when daylight permits - this may
be spilt into two days and three days. These are minimum durations, and some trainees
may need further consolidation
Experienced operators: 3 days (Evidence of experience required)
