Establishment of Ofqual 16th May

Ofqual, the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator, was yesterday launched as the new regulator of qualifications, exams and tests in England. We will be holding a formal launch event on 16 May at the National Motorcycle Museum, in the West Midlands to which you will be invited. I do hope you are able to attend.

As you are aware Ofqual will act as the independent guardian of standards and quality across the exams system. We will ensure that children, young people and adult learners get the results their work deserves and that that their qualifications count now and in the future.

Ofqual will set out clear requirements of what is expected of the awarding bodies and organisations that provide qualifications and assessments.  Working in partnership with the awarding bodies, we will encourage innovation whilst ensuring that standards are maintained. The formation of Ofqual and the introduction of its new logo will have implications for qualification certificates.  We will be contacting you shortly to discuss timeframes and procedures for implementing these changes.

I am sure you welcomed as much as we did the recent appointment of Kathleen Tattersall as the Chair of Ofqual. Kathleen has great experience in our sector and we look forward to her leadership in delivering Ofqual's agenda.

We have produced an information leaflet http://www.ofqual.gov.uk/1113.aspx to explain Ofqual's agenda. This sets out our responsibilities and provides you with all the contact details you may require.
