Time is Running Out

From the end of April, any business involved in the transportation of animals in connection with an economic activity could be liable to a £5000 fine and/or 6 months imprisonment if they do not hold the correct certificate of competence.

In response to this, Lantra Awards has developed a Level 2 certificate of competence qualification and are currently offering assessments enabling drivers and attendants to meet the appropriate levels needed for European Council Regulations, Welfare of Animals During Transport 1/2005.

Time is running out for those who need the certificate.  With over 500 training providers across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Lantra Awards is able to offer training courses as well as the certificate of competence qualification in locations across the UK.

Lantra Awards have developed a Level 2 certificate of competence entitled Welfare of Animals During Transport. The purpose of this qualification (accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and approved by DEFRA and the Welsh Assembly) is to enable drivers and attendants using road vehicles for transporting farm animals, birds and horses in connection with an economic activity to meet the requirements of European Council Regulation 1/2005. The Lantra Awards certificate of competence is broken down into the two key areas as defined in the EC regulations:
Short journey
Long journey

Do you know the new regulation?
?Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations requires that from 5 January 2008 transporters of vertebrate animals in connection with an economic activity and market assembly centre staff handling animals are trained in the relevant technical provisions of the Regulation?. This aim is achieved through the development of relevant skills and knowledge that address the competences as listed in Annexes I, II and III of the DEFRA Guidance; Part 2L  Training and Competence Requirements under Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations.
