Lantra Awards newest centre for Level 2 Certificate in Land-Based Activities ran a great open day highlighting the development of a number of learning and development opportunities for ex / current service personnel to build on their existing skills, enabling progression.

The programme was launched by RLS (Rural Life Skills) at Game Lea Farm on the Chatsworth Estate, Derbyshire in conjunction with large specialist military PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) organisations.

Elizabeth Hill, RLS Director (pictured far right) told us more about the organisation; We provide rehabilitation and training in a wide variety of practical rural skills.  These include dry stone walling, hedge laying, fencing and wild life conservation.  We deliver workshop skills in Agricultural Engineering tractor and machinery repair and restoration, Joinery and Blacksmithing.  We have a commercial plant nursery where we deliver skills involved in cultivation of ornamental plants and trees together with organic vegetable growing and harvesting leading to healthy eating.  General agriculture, animal husbandry, and equine studies are also on offer as well as fun activities such as off-roading with land rovers, motocross and Harness Horse Racing.

Elizabeth Hill commented, we have become a Lantra Awards registered assessment centre to give us more credibility and enable us to deliver recognised qualifications which will help our clients to move on into further specialised training or gain employment.

Having delivered skills and therapeutic activities to young people excluded or in danger of exclusion for over ten years RLS has a track record of successfully turning lives around and helping them gain qualifications and move them on into further education / training or work.

We believe that it is a combination of trainer skills, respect for the clients and more importantly because delivery takes place in beautiful fresh air and open space and countryside.  We believe working with animals of all kinds also has a calming and therapeutic effect, Elizabeth Hill informed.
