TECHNICAL AWARDS > Forestry & Arb > Chainsaws and Aerial Tree Work
There are two routes to training and certification for chainsaws and aerial tree work. Each suite of courses follows a logical, pre-requisite, progression:
1. Integrated Training and assessment (ITA) courses, leading to a Lantra Awards Certificate of Training.
For chainsaws, the ITA route is suitable for someone who intends to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure activities, but does not intend to work in forestry or arboricultural activities or work on Forestry Commission land, or fell material over 200mm in diameter. (HSE)
- Chainsaws maintenance and crosscutting (ITA): 2 days, max. 4 trainees
- Chainsaws basic felling techniques (up to 200mm in diameter) (ITA): 2 days, max. 4 trainees
2. Non-assessed courses, providing a Lantra Awards attendance certificate and leading to assessment for an NPTC certificate of competence (CS units).
This route is intended for someone who anticipates seeking contractual work in professional forestry, amenity or arboricultural activities which is likely, immediately or at some future date, to involve felling trees over 200mm in diameter, and/or aerial tree work. (HSE)
- Chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting (CS30): 2 days, max. 4 trainees
- Felling small trees up to 380mm, including takedown of hung up trees using hand tools (CS31): 3 days, max. 4 trainees
- Felling medium-sized trees (380 760mm) (CS32): 3 days, max. 4 trainees
- Felling large trees (over 760mm)* (CS33): 2 days, max. 4 trainees
- Assisted felling*: 1 day, max. 4 trainees
- Dealing with windblown trees (CS34): 2 days, max. 4 trainees
- Use of Chainsaw from a MEWP (CS47): 1 day, max. 2 trainees or 2 days, max. 4 trainees
- Pole pruners (CS48): 1 day, max. 4 trainees
