TECHNICAL AWARDS > Pesticides
Pesticides are very widely and successfully used in land-based industries. Because they are potentially harmful substances, it is essential that they are handled, applied and stored by people who have received proper training. Training is a legal requirement. Use of pesticides is governed by the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA), the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH). The regulations require employers to ensure that pesticides are applied only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. If you are self-employed, the regulations still apply.
In certain circumstances employees must also be assessed and acquire a Certificate of Competence.
